MAGICBIOMAT Academy

MAGICBIOMAT Academy is the learning programme of the EU Horizon Europe project MAGICBIOMAT (grant 101181381). It will host a free, open-access MOOC on circularity, trustworthy AI for programmed biodegradation, and life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) on Digiotouch Skills.

What is MAGICBIOMAT?

MAGICBIOMAT is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action that designs circular bio-based materials programmed to biodegrade in real open environments. Many so-called biodegradable plastics only break down in controlled waste systems. When they leak into soil or water they can linger and shed microplastics.

The project builds a portfolio of materials for two high-littering uses—agricultural mulching films and paper-based packaging—tested in soil, freshwater, and marine conditions across European climates. A trustworthy AI manufacturing-guidance tool will match material design to application needs and end-of-life conditions. Circularity work covers durability, reuse, remanufacturing, and mechanical recycling, plus labelling and behaviour-change research for user acceptance. Official record: CORDIS project 101181381

What is MAGICBIOMAT Academy?

MAGICBIOMAT Academy is the project’s training and knowledge-transfer hub on Digiotouch Skills. Digiotouch (DIGI) hosts the cloud-based MOOC. Partners co-develop open-access modules from project results for academia, industry, and the scientific community.

Task 11.3 covers outreach and training materials, including a five-module MOOC on circularity, trustworthy AI for programmed biodegradation, and LCSA. Informal webinars gather local members on topics of broad interest every six months. Task 12.2 then uses the MOOC as a capacity-building channel for the European bio-based industry.

The academy is for people who will design, manufacture, assess, or govern programmed biodegradable materials—not only polymer specialists.
